Music in Baptist Churches of America
One question I must ask before I go into my article.
If you go about and pick up every Ipod, Iphone or MP3 player from all the young people in your church and listen to every song on each one of these, and believe me, the children and teens of today ARE VERY MUSIC oriented, make a list of all the Hymns you find on their music players.
I venture to say, you will NOT need a notebook, possibly a Post-It sticker would suffice. So, what are the kids and teens listening to?
I must repeat this question. WHAT ARE THE YOUTH OF TODAY, THOSE YOUTH IN YOUR CHURCHS LISTENING TO on their mp3 players?
Go get some of them and ask them to let you listen to what they have on their players. I assure you, I assure you... you will be amazed at what is NOT on there, and what IS on there.
The young people of today require music that speaks to them on their Level. Wait, WAIT before you throuw up your hands and say, but they need The Bible... they do not need all that emotionism...
My friend, I call you my friend because I love you... you need to wake up and smell the coffee. If you are not giving your youth the good, contemporary music that makes a joyful noise unto The Lord, in contemporary manner... you are NOT ministering to them in song.
Psalm 100
Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands.
You so easily accept books which are New Translations of the Word of God, you get up in the pulpit reading from the New International Version, the New Living Word, or one of a hundred NEW TRANSLATIONS which are so much easier to understand... Even though these New Translations Take Away from The Word of God which is strictly forbidden... but you hold to these old archaic melodies in your song ministry....
How can you so easily accept change in The Word of God... but stand so steadfastly upon the premis that your archaic music is reaching and ministering to the very heart, the very future of your church body... YOUR YOUTH?
Churches today, the ones which have members... have a spectrum of the way their music is handled. There is a wide spectrum of audience within those church bodies as well.
The Word of God tells us to look at moderation in all things. I would guess, or surmise that possibly there is a middle ground between radical new christian music which young people are creating and the old hymns which have been sung throughout decades past.
On the one end of the spectrum you have churches which have their old standby hymnals and this is where they draw upon all their music. They promote the idea that as long as they have good, solid Bible Teaching that their old, archaic hymns which have been sung for decads are ministering to their youth. The old, solid members of the church like those songs, they were good enough for their parents.
On the other hand you have the churches which have and promote every manner of modern music to their youth. In baptist churches you will hear the pastor or song leader say something like this, "Those churches are all caught up in emotion. They jump around and get all emotional and hyped up and they have a great time. A great show. But you will find that those churches have no foundation. They do not teach The Word of God. These churches are great at making people feel good, but people need more.. people need to hear good, sound Bible Doctrinal Teaching. And quite frankly, these feel good churches do not bring the word. All they care about is ministering to the emotions of people.
I am not saying the hymns are outdated or serve no purpose... Many a new and greatly enjoyed and respected Contemporary singer sing hymns, take Third Day who sing Blessed Assurance... What an awesome song... but Third Day also has created and sing Many great Contemporary songs and the kids love them and they have them on their Ipods, Iphones and MP3 players. They go about singing them and talking about them to each other....The new contemporary music is edifying Christ... the new contemporary music is uplifting and a joyful noise to The Lord.
Baptist Preacher.. Listen to the song below... and tell me what is Non Biblical and against the word of God in this song...
This song is by a contemporary group called, Building 429
Lyrics are on the next page.
Building 429 "Always"
I was standing in the pouring rain one dark November night
Fighting off the bitter cold when she caught my eye
Her face was taught and her eyes were filled, and to my surprise
She pulled out a photograph and my heart just stopped inside
She said, “He would’ve been three today
I miss his smile, I miss his face”
What was I supposed to say, but
CHORUS
I believe always, always
Our Savior never fails
Even when all hope is gone
God knows our pain and his promise remains
He will be with you always
He was living in a broken world, dreaming of a home
His heart was barely keeping pace when I found him all alone
Remembering the way he felt when his daddy said goodbye
Fighting just to keep the tears and the anger locked inside
He’s barely holding onto faith
But deliverance is on its way, cause
CHORUS
I believe always, always
Our Savior never fails
Even when all hope is gone
God knows our pain and his promise remains
He will be with you always
Friend, I don’t know where you are and I don’t know where you’ve been
Maybe you’re fighting for your life or just about to throw the towel in
But if you’re crying out for mercy, if there’s no hope left at all
If you’ve given everything you’ve got and you’re still about to fall
Well hold on, hold on, hold on, cause
I believe always, always
Our savior never fails
Even when all faith is gone
God knows our pain and his promise remains
Always, always, He will be with you always
I will write more on this article when I get back from taking my kids to the dentist.
