- C.S. Lewis Wrote books, not quotes. I have a great deal of respect for Lewis and have read several of his works. However, ripping his quotes entirely out of context and posting them as if the sentence alone was a logical and well thought out argument does no favors to the man. He was a great explainer and if you sit down and read his works it is hard not to be convinced of many of his claims. But if you rip his quotes out of context in an attempt to make a pithy point it doesn't work and only makes the man look stupid. C.S. Lewis was anything but Pithy. submitted by johntheChristian [link] [33 comments]
- American Christians...Really? I'm a Welsh-Christian and I keep seeing posts about Creationism, racism and homo-phobia in the church and I have a few questions that I hope people can help me with. I'd like to begin that I'm not going to pass judgement on other people's beliefs, I'm just a bit disturbed by some of the things I've read on here and on other websites. I AM NOT TRYING TO START AN ARGUMENT, I genuinely want to know more about these issues. Is creationism still widely believed within the church in the US, or is it just a very loud minority? Do people believe that gay people will go to hell? (same for atheists, Muslims etc) Does anyone on here believe that homosexual marriages damage the institution of marriage Is abortion really seen as murder? I have no intention of raising my kids as Christians, does this make me a 'Bad' Christian. Genuine responses greatly appreciated, I'm just trying to get my head around some seemingly massive differences between different branches of the same faith. EDIT- It's now 21.48GMT so I'm signing off for the evening. I will respond to as many comments as I reasonably can tomorrow and would like to thank everyone who has responded to this, in whatever way they have done so, you've been very helpful in making me understand more about the range of beliefs in American churches. submitted by MermaidyLady [link] [44 comments]

- I am a Christian but I have just volunteered to help with... I am a Christian. Most people loosely describe themselves as such so I will explain to you what it means to me. I believe that Christ died on the cross for my sins and for all the sins of others. I believe that Salvation is only achieved through Christ by the Grace of God. But, I can not support the alienation and discrimination of gays. I fully support their cause even though I am a straight male Christian. As Christians, aren't we taught to love? We are taught of love, of it's strength. Well I tell you what, reddit. I've seen the love between my Uncle and his partner. There's no faking that. Basically I want to know if any of you disagree with me. I'm up for a nice conversation. submitted by pbskids [link] [81 comments]

- Were all Human. Being human means we all make mistakes and as Christians we sin. However sometimes I feel the Christian community doesn't talk to each other about our sins because we would like to seem to be free of it, and I find this counter productive to actually taking responsibility of our sins and dealing with them. So I ask the question: What do you do that you feel because of our faith you shouldn't be doing? Maybe there are some people here who could help you. I guess Ill go 1st. I take Ecstacy sometimes on nights out. I can feel Gods gaze on me and I know that I shudn't do it. Also sex before marriage. - Are there ANY Orthodox churches that offer childcare? I really want to go to an Orthodox church in our area, but almost every single one I contact doesn't offer child care. I appreciate that they're welcoming to little kids, but seriously...my toddler daughter is too disruptive for me and my wife...I'm not so concerned about anyone else. I want her to eventually join us, but at this stage in her kid-life, she's not so easy to make be quiet. This is more of a rant than a question. Not sure what to do. submitted by partofaplan2 [link] [13 comments]

- Foods that are good—and bad—for your heart
If you’re trying to eat a heart-healthy diet, figuring out what to believe can be overwhelming. The advice we get on everything from eggs to olive oil is often confusing and maddeningly contradictory.
Ironically, this growing confusion comes at a time when scientists who study nutrition know more than ever. Too often, though, we hear about only the latest study (which may be poorly designed) or research that’s cherry-picked to support an agenda. That’s like seeing one or two pieces of a jigsaw puzzle and trying to determine what the entire picture is.

- Apparently, Rick Santorum is a 10 year old. I saw a Facebook photo of Rick Santorum with one of his quotes written on the photo. It said: "People are looking for someone who they know loves this country for what it is - that we are the greatest country in the history of the world." I was immediately taken back to when I was in fourth grade when many times the boys would talk about how awesome America is, how we are the greatest country in the world, and about how we could kick everybody's asses - in a big circle ego-jerk. Then I thought about Einstein's quote: "Nationalism is an infantile disease. It is the measles of mankind." Santorum's quote is definitely up there with the most nauseating quotes of this election cycle. Clarification Edit: I do understand that almost every politician expresses this same idea in some way, and while it bothers me no matter who says it or how, it was the way Santorum said it that I found particularly nauseating. It was phrased almost exactly like I would expect a 10 year old boy to phrase it and not a candidate for president. submitted by epoxy_proxy [link] [479 comments]

- Selling Used MP3s Found Legal In America
bs0d3 writes "After some litigation; ReDigi, a site where people can sell used MP3's has been found legal in America. One of the key decisions the judge had to make was whether MP3's were material objects or not. 'Material objects' are not subject to the distribution right stipulated in "17 USC 106(3)" which protects the sale of intellectual property copies. If MP3's are material objects than the resale of them is guaranteed legal under the first sale' exception in 17 USC 109. Capitol Records tried to argue that they were material objects under one law and not under the other. Today the judge has sided with the first-sale doctrine, which means he is seeing these as material objects."

For example, English and Greek make strong distinctions between the present and the future, while German doesn't, while English and Greek speakers are statistically poorer and in worse health than Germans. (The study includes a broader swath of languages/nationalities, but that's a start.)"

The founder of leading advocacy group China Labor Watch (CLW) told us that, though the Cupertino company does more-thorough inspections than competitors, it is responsible for poor working conditions at its suppliers' factories and needs to invest some of its record-breaking profits in improving them. 'Although I know that the iPhone 4 is made at sweat shop factories in China, I still think that this is the only choice, because Apple is actually one of the best. Actually before I made a decision, I compared Apple with other cell phone companies, such as Nokia,' he said through a translator. Doyle argues that a program he created to allow doctors to view embryos over the early Internet, was the first program that allowed users to interact with images inside of a web browser window. He is therefore seeking royalties for the use of just about every modern interactive Internet technology, like watching videos or suggesting instant search results. Dozens of lawyers, representing the world's biggest internet companies, including Yahoo, Amazon, Google and YouTube are acting as defendants in the case, which has even seen Tim Berners-Lee testify on Tuesday."

- Virtual Reality Helmet Designed For Deep Space Surgery
pigrabbitbear writes in with a link about a virtual reality helmet designed to help people deal with medical emergencies in space. "Humans are pretty fragile. A bad break in your hip can mean surgery and months of rehab. That's pretty bad, but what if you fall and break your hip on the Moon, or even Mars? You'd be hundreds of thousands or millions of miles from a fully stocked hospital and a surgeon with steady hands. There's the option of doctor-assisted surgery from Earth — a fellow astronaut performing the surgery with remote assistance from a doctor via video link. But the lengthy communications delay make this a poor option anywhere further than the Moon. Luckily for our Mars-bound descendants, the European Space Agency has a solution: an information-loaded assisted reality helmet that will let anyone identify and perform minor surgery to repair injuries."

Does someone want to help me out with the rules on photo rights, and do I have grounds to call them out on it? Would appreciate any help! submitted by hamburgerhelpers [link] [31 comments]
- Can we have something on the sidebar that links to a "wha... There's a post about this every single week. This should be put somewhere prominent so the same thing doesn't have to regurgitated every week. Just a thought... submitted by shader [link] [3 comments]
- Going to shoot the auto show next week. Any tips? I'm a hobbyist and typically I've always done bands or portraits, so I am not sure what to expect going shooting in an environment like the auto show. I imagine that there will be some issues with glare, or reflections on the cars. Any strategies for dealing with this? submitted by jnrdpr [link] [12 comments]
- Advice on buying Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Lens. I currently have a Nikon d5100 that I really like, but am new to. I have an old Nikon e series 35mm lens(not my picture). Would I be wasting my time to buy the DX version of this lens? I don't have a real need for the AF. I just want to know if it is actually an upgrade or a sidegrade. I was thinking I should save my money and just put it towards a Tokina or sigma wide angle. Thoughts or opinions? Thanks in advance submitted by failingfreely [link] [2 comments]

- Dilemma: Controversial/Graphic images to show Hi all, I've been given an awesome opportunity to show my work in an art gallery for the first time. It's slated for early 2013. I've never shown before, so I've been keeping a keen eye on my shots and what I'd like to show. I don't have any particular theme, as I've been given pretty much free reign to display as much as I want. I'll go with a bit of street stuff, artsy fartsy crap and possibly some, shudders, landscape photos. lol. Here's my problem. The other day I was out in our industrial park and I found a dead dog. The dog was wearing a leash that looked like it had been chewed through. It was completely alone surrounded by these old, unused industrial buildings. His mouth is slightly hanging open and it's obvious the leash got torn/chewed off. Personally, I feel it's a powerful image considering some local context (animal abuse and abandonment runs high). But my wife thinks it would be wrong for me to show it, saying I'd offend too many people and it's just, well, tasteless. I don't consider the photo itself to be great in terms of composition, but looking at the image long enough tells a story by itself. But it is still a dead dog. Would you show it? I'm really on the fence. edit: Someone requested the link. Here is one of my shots; not sure if it's the best at this point. Warning, you might be offended. http://i.imgur.com/V8CXv.jpg submitted by MilesColtrane [link] [18 comments]
- Point-and-shoot for the SLR Lover Selling my neglected D70 and lenses and replacing it with something <$300 and feature rich. Any advice? I've been eyeing the Canon S90/95/100, Panasonic DMC-LX3, LX5 and ELPH 300. My problem with the D70 and 3 lenses was I wouldn't take it out, due to weight, bulk forcing me to take a bag everywhere. Any advice? submitted by Ovlovian [link] [28 comments]
